ALWAYS QUESTION THE STRUCTURE is a section of COPENHAGEN ULTRACONTEMPORARY BIENNALE (CUB) dedicated to questioning other biennials' structure and concept.
Global biennialization of the art world has given biennials authority to function as the supreme arbiter of the international art world. Biennials have a great power to implement and influence the public opinion. It is thus important to question the motivations behind biennials.
CUB questions other biennials while they happen and creates immediate artworks on the spot. CUB takes the thematic of the biennales seriously and tests their pertinence on location. We believe that the political attitudes presented in biennials’ curatorial concepts are not always in a transparent connection with the true motivations of the biennials.
Often biennials promote themselves as optimal platforms for critical thinking, giving the public a sensation of being dog watching, when in reality the biennial structure paralyzes the public awareness muscle.
Artists have for decades questioned the canvas, the pigment, the frame and the museum...CUB is questioning the biennials.
During the 60-years anniversary for documenta in Kassel, CUB was questioning documenta's interest in Greece. “What does documenta want to export?” LINK
During the opening of Venice Biennale 2015,
CUB was questioning the readings of Karl Marx.
The artwork “What Does an Elitist Event Like the Venice Biennale Has To Do with Karl Marx?” started the main critic of the Venice Biennale concept. LINK
